The ETUC, NGOs and the refugee crisis at the heart of EFFAT Youth Committee talks

26/02/2016

The EFFAT Youth Committee gathered in Brussels on 29 January. The meeting focused on the response of trade unions to the challenges that young people are facing and explored ways of cooperating with the ETUC, NGOs and civil society organisations, including the European Youth Forum. EFFAT also invited a representative from the Belgian Red Cross with the aim of finding a way to support refugees.

The commitments of the youth committee were reiterated and new future activities were laid down, namely:

  • Ensuring that the youth pledge signed by EFFAT Member Organisations during the 4th EFFAT Congress in 2014 is properly implemented and monitored.
  • Member organisations should play an active role in bringing youth-related issues to the fore through collective national bargaining negotiations, social dialogue and EWCs.
  • Monitoring the youth pledges with FoodDrink Europe and Hotrec within the framework of the European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA).
  • Further to the discussion with the Belgian Red Cross representative, the EFFAT Youth Committee requests that the EFFAT Executive Committee keeps the refugee crisis on the EFFAT political agenda, and calls for trade unions to play a bigger part in facilitating the integration of refugees into the labour market.

Further to the meeting of ETUF Youth representatives with European Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Marianne Thyssen, the EFFAT Youth committee called on the Commission to do more to strengthen the Youth Guarantee implementation plan and to increase future funding for the initiative. Therefore, the EFFAT Youth Committee urges EU national governments and the EU Commission to adopt a substantial European investment plan to stimulate aggregate demand and help create quality jobs with programmes aimed specifically at bringing young people in to the labour market.
