On 8 March NH ITALY started a dismissal procedure affecting 98 members of staff, 56 of which are employed in the NH hotels in Rome and Palermo, which will likely close down. Another 42 layoffs will be due to ‘reorganising’ procedures across the country. This will be the eighth since 2012, with almost 500 workers at risk of losing their job.
Lately the NH chain has performed particularly well in Italy. The decision therefore comes as a surprise for EFFAT’s Italian affiliates Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL and UILtucs UIL, who have urged the company to reconsider its position and clarify its long-term strategy in Italy.
In light of the recent agreement establishing a NH EWC structure, EFFAT urges the European management to open a constructive dialogue with the Italian Unions and to convene a EWC meeting immediately, with the hope to find a speedy and viable solution for the company and the workers affected by the procedure.
