On 9 February our Italian affiliates from FLAI CGIL, UILA UIL and FAI CISL participated in the mass demonstration against the economic and social policies of the Italian Populist Government.
More than 300,000 people marched through the streets of Rome. United under the banner “A Future for Work,” Italy’s largest trade unions brought attention to the country’s long stagnating economy and lack of full-time employment opportunities, especially for young people and called the populist government from League and 5 stars movement to open a serious confrontation while addressing vital issues such as the creation of quality jobs, viable infrastructures and fiscal policies.
Harald Wiedenhofer, EFFAT Secretary General, welcomed the demonstration saying: ‘It is a such good sign to see so many people peacefully taking the streets. It is a vital sign for democracy. As Italy was recently declared close to recession, the Italian government is making a huge mistake by not opening up a dialogue with trade unions about labour and economic policies’.
